In September 2006, social networking site Facebook was opened to the general public. The only two requirements were that you be over 13 and have a valid email address. Not even three years later there are 45 million active Facebook users in the U.S. and according to a report by independent blog Inside Facebook, the fastest growing demographic on Facebook is: your mom. That’s right, the number of Facebook users in the female 55+ demo grew 175% since September ’08!
One shrewd Kentucky based venture, VibrantNation.com, was out ahead of this trend. They recognized the significant opportunity presented by the immense purchasing power of this brand influencing population segment and launched a social media site for them in 2007. As testament to the online and social media interest of these moms and grandmas, the first question you will find posted in VibrantNation's Q&A section under the Technology & Internet category is posted by “GrannieT” and reads: “How safe is Facebook?” The question for the rest of us is, how safe is it to post those pics from Vegas now that mom's watching?
